Nour Bishouty. Unlikely Mother.

 

Unlikely Mother is Nour Bishouty’s (Amman, 1986) first solo museum exhibition and her debut presentation in Mexico. The exhibition premieres her film Catfish Mother Puddle of Juice (2025-2026), shown alongside a constellation of new and recent sculptures and drawings. Filmed in Mexico City and Toronto, the film unfolds as a parable narrated by a catfish in which the figures of mother and child slip and reassemble within a dreamlike temporality. Voiced in Spanish, the monologue drifts between allegory and scientific precision, gently unsettling the linguistic and pictorial systems that govern how bodies are named and rendered legible.

Based in Toronto, the Palestinian-Lebanese artist draws on familial narratives to attend to gaps in archival memory and the Western production of knowledge and fantasy. This body of work unfolded from Bishouty’s initial intention to make a film about her mother’s differently-formed hands, expanding into an exploration of gesture as a site of unresolved meaning. Set against persistent regimes of regulation, state violence, and surveillance directed at vulnerable bodies, the exhibition dwells in ambiguity and resemblance, tracing entangled genealogies and unconventional relations.

Nour Bishouty (Amán, Jordania, 1986)
Artista libanesa-palestina-canadiense cuyo trabajo abarca video, escultura, obra en papel, imágenes digitales y escritura. Preocupada por las lagunas en la memoria de archivo y la fantasía, su práctica explora nociones de articulación y permiso, así como las posibilidades generativas de los malentendidos.

 

Su obra ha sido presentada en diversos países.
